Neurofeedback

Employing the electroencephalogram (EEG), Neurofeedback training (NFBT) is a computer technology that uses information about the brain's production of brainwaves to facilitate the brain's self regulation and balancing.  It helps exercise and retrain the brain while reinforcing healthy, balanced brain function.  Sensors detect brainwave activity from their placement on the scalp.  This information is processed by the computer and feedback is given to the brain in the form of video images, sound, or both so that the client learns how to exercise and retrain the brain to become calmer, more alert, focused, efficient, and more flexible.  It can help improve attention, mental flexibility, mood, behavior, and energy levels, and has been known to produce beneficial results in people who suffer from depression, anxiety, sleep issues, ADD/ADHD, traumatic brain injury, addiction, psycological trauma, and more.

Neurofeedback Training is the foundational technology used in our clinic to address the brain’s dysregulation underlying our clients' symptoms. We begin with the client EEG , compare it with a collection of EEGs of people similar to the client called a normative data base, and with computer software, produce brain maps and graphs (qEEG) to identify the patterns of brain activity that are associated with client symptoms. Neurofeedback training addresses the anomalies in brain functioning that have been targeted by the brain map.  Successful treatment mitigates these patterns resulting in reduction or elimination of client symptoms.

Neurofeedback is a drug-free method that has demonstrated effectiveness with the following issues:

ADD/ADHD: symptoms of distractibility, impulsivity, and disorganization
Anxiety
Chronic Stress
Depression
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
Developmental Trauma
Age-related Cognitive Decline
Anger, uncontrolled rage
Alcoholism & Substance Abuse
Sleep Difficulties

Obsessive Rumination

Peak Performance: enhancing musical, athletic, academic, and professional performance
Migraines/Headaches
Traumatic Brain Injury

Executive functioning
Neurofeedback training combined with psychotherapy for some issues produces a synergistic progress in therapy with results neither could achieve separately.

Safety of Traditional EEG Neurofeedback:
Neurofeedback training is non-invasive, meaning that no electrical impulses come into the brain from the outside. It is a safe and painless process that only uses information: feeding information to the brain about what the brain is doing, and the brain using that information to learn to self-regulate. Side effects are rare, transient, and reversible. Occasionally, headaches may occur, easily resolved by rest or eating. No negative side effects have been observed from long-term use.
